
His new CD is entitled "Ride
the Tide While It's High" (released May 20, 2004) and
the tide is certainly high for saxophonist Mark Baker.
Mark Baker has had the good fortune to perform with such big names
as Jonathan Butler, the Bar-Kays, Con Funk Shun, Boney James and Ruby
Wilson (the Queen of Beale Street) in Montreal, Canada.
Even political dignitaries know who to call to put that special "ummph"
in their event. He has performed at special events nationally and
locally, including events for Mayor M. Pratt of Milwaukee, WI; Mayor
W. W. Herenton of Memphis, TN and Mayor A. C. Wharton of Shelby County,
TN.
Mark has put his special touch on a Celebrity Golf Tournament in honor
of the late NFL Football Great Walter Payton; the national anthem
at a sold out NBA Game featuring the Minnesota Timberwolves vs. the
Memphis Grizzlies and Wicked Ways, a hit play making a touring
stop at the Orpheum Theatre.
He has the talent for capturing emotions and feelings for the groove.
He's also known for putting on a show wherever it is needed. His repertoire
includes Hip-Hop, R&B, Jazz, Country and Gospel, where his roots
lie.
The saxophonist/arranger/composer/writer from Memphis, TN began learning
Gospel music in 1978 under the direction of Lonnie Neely. He began
playing Gospel in 1980 and hasn't looked back or slowed down since.
He has accomplished a variety of tasks and workshops and received
numerous awards during his high school career.
Since then, Mark has performed with a number of local community choirs,
small groups and organizations. He is well known in his hometown from
his many performances at local events and night clubs. He has been
covered by the local media, including the Commercial Appeal and News
Channel 3.
He has performed on 4 albums to date, including the Gospel groups
Divine Providence and Perfection and his brand new CD "Ride
the Tide While It's High."
Mark currently plays for COGIC Praise Temple on a regular basis.
He recently performed with Will Downing at the Grand Casino Tunica.
